FAQ

Our club was founded in July of 1990 with the goal of preserving and displaying antique engines and tractors. Since 1990 our club has grown five fold, but our mission remains the same and we still maintain the close camaraderie that characterized our beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are these things?

A: You are probably referring to flywheel engines. They are antique gasoline and kerosene powered engines that were the predecessors of the more modern air-cooled engines commonly seen on lawn mowers and such. Their hey-day was about 1900-1930.

Q: How do l find one?

A: Surprisingly, there are many still tucked away in old barns and garages. They also show up at auctions and antique sales. Collectors buy and sell them all the time, even on the Internet.

Q: When and where does your club meet?

A: We hold our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm. We meet at thePleasant Plains Fire House, which is located on Clayton Avenue just off Route 9 in Toms River.

Q: Do I need to own an engine or tractor in order to join?

A: Absolutely not. A number of our members do not currently own a piece of equipment, but participate anyway.

Q: What do you do at the meetings?

A: We start with a short business meeting to organize upcoming activities. We often include “show and tell” time for members to show off their latest “find”, a mechanical project that they have been working on, or to discuss a recent show they have attended. We then adjourn for coffee and donuts.

Q: Can kids join?

A: Absolutely. The goal of any preservation society is to pass it on to the next generation.

Q: The hobby sounds interesting. May I attend your meetings to find out more?

A: Sure. We have visitors all the time. That is how most members get started. I may have a few more questions, who should I contact?

A: Doug Leifert at 732-244-8522 or Dan Italiano at 609-971-1559
